Vol. 5 in this 14-CD series has all of the recordings by Ruth Coleman (other than one number released elsewhere of her with Jimmy O'Bryant), Henryette Davis, Madlyn Davis (other than her 1928 recordings with Tampa Red), Louise De Vant (other than her session with Perry Bradford), Jessie Derrick, Dorothy Dodd, and Maureen Englin. Most of these performances are quite interesting, with highlights including Ruth Coleman's "Original Charleston Strut," Henryette Davis' charming but dated "Jazzaphobia Blues," Jessie Derrick's interaction with Harvey Brooks' Quality Four and the singing overall of Madlyn Davis and Dorothy Dodd. Also of interest is Maureen Englin's lone selection, "Foolin' Me," since it includes Sidney Bechet on soprano sax. - Review by Scott Yanow
