Most of Sylvester Weaver's recorded works were reissued in his name by the Document label in the early '90s, and the first of two volumes covers most of his recording activity from November 1923 through August 1927. Weaver's initial appearance on records was as accompanist to blues singer Sara Martin, and while Document bundled most of their collaborations into Martin's four-volume Complete Recorded Works, she pops up here and there on this collection under the pseudonym Sally Roberts. Johnny Shines

Delta bluesman, and one-time Robert Johnson cohort, whose career extended into the 1960s folk revival. John Ned Shines, b. April 26, 1915 in Frayser, TN, d. April 20, 1992 in Tuscaloosa, AL, blues singer and guitarist, active 1932 – 1992. Johnny Shines was taught to play the guitar by his mother and sometimes worked the streets of Memphis for tips with a group of other youths. In 1932 he set up as a sharecropper in Hughes, Arkansas, but still worked part-time as a musician. During the 30s he hoboed around the work-camp and juke-joint circuit in the company of such men as Robert Johnson, with whom he appeared on a radio show in 1937. His ramblings took him as far as Canada. In 1941, he took the trail north to Chicago where he sometimes performed in the famous Maxwell Street market before forming his own group to play the clubs; he sometimes doubled as house photographer. Geeshie Wiley

Female country blues singer and guitarist, who, often in the company of Elvie Thomas recorded six songs for Paramount from 1930 until 1931. Great "phantom" of the Delta blues, female singer of unknown origin or later life whose haunting voice bewitches discerning fans. * * * Geeshie Wiley, b. November 14, 1908 in Louisiana (possible), d. July 29, 1950 in Texas (possible). Country blues singer and guitar player who recorded six songs for Paramount Records, issued on three records in April 1930. According to the blues historian Don Kent, Wiley "may well have been the rural South's greatest female blues singer and musician". Little is known of her life, and there are no known photographs of her. She may have been born Lillie Mae Boone, later Lillie Mae Scott.
