Depending on the focus of the listener, Document's Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1928-1930) is either an important investigation into the early blues recordings of Thomas Dorsey or an overly long collection with too much substandard material. As on other volumes in the Complete Recorded Works series, solid performances alternate with alternate takes and novelties, while the lengthy running time and poor fidelity make for a difficult compilation. ~ Thom Owens
