This excellent compilation of 24 sides from the 1930s presents Carlisle in a variety of settings, including tracks on which his steel guitar is the only accompaniment, and slightly fuller arrangements with Wilbur Ball on backup guitar and harmony. As a yodeler, Carlisle did not shy away from risqué lyrics, but that was only one facet of his repertoire, which also included hobo songs and standards. It's like hearing Jimmie Rodgers with first-rate steel guitar, and indeed this will probably appeal mightily to Rodgers fans, as well as some listeners who don't even have any Rodgers discs. ~ Richie Unterberger
