Belton Sutherland

Belton Sutherland was born on February 14, 1911. The Sutherland family worked as sharecroppers in the small hamlet of Camden, Mississippi. He played music on a semi-regular basis with Clyde Maxwell, of Canton, a versatile musician who played both fiddle and guitar. Folklorist Worth Long had recognized his spellbinding performance ability during his many travels in the deep South during the 1960’s and 1970’s for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Long did not forget him when he returned to Mississippi in 1978. Sutherland’s sole recorded legacy where those captured for The Land Where the Blues Began. Sutherland appears only for about a minute and ten seconds during the entire film. Thankfully the 30th anniversary DVD featured more performances. Sutherland passed in 1983. A full-length article about him appeared in the April 2018 issue of Living Blues magazine. (from Big Road Blues Show 7/1/18: Highway 61 - Field Recordings; End of an Era Pt. 1)
