b. July 21, 1917 in Marianna, AR, d. December 19, 1989 in Chicago, IL. Brought up in the Mississippi Delta, Jones had been playing guitar for some years by the time he settled in Chicago around 1945. He soon became part of a seminal group of musicians that had come up from the south and who were in the process of developing the new electric Chicago blues sound. He played with his guitarist cousin Moody Jones and harmonica player Snooky Pryor and their first record together, ‘Stockyard Blues’/‘Keep What You Got’, is a classic of its time and place. Under his own name, he made a number of fine records for JOB, Chess Records and Vee Jay Records in the early 50s, including the atmospheric ‘Dark Road’ which owed much to the work of Tommy Johnson. Rediscovered in the 60s blues boom, Jones made further records for Testament and Advent. Jones remained active on the Chicago scene until shortly before his 1989 death.
