John Lee Granderson

John Lee Granderson was a blues singer and guitarist, known for his role in the Chicago blues scene and his deep roots in the Memphis style. He was a fixture on Maxwell Street and a respected collaborator among blues legends.

Blues singer and guitarist, born 1913 in Ellendale, Tennessee, died August 22, 1979 in Chicago. Granderson settled in Chicago to work outside music in 1928; he played with Sonny Boy Williamson in the 1930s, suffered injury, and worked full-time in music from 1964. Recorded by Pete Welding 1962-1964 (mostly released on Welding's Testament label), also backing other blues artists such as Robert Nighthawk, Big Joe Williams, and Big John Wrencher.

b. April 11, 1913 in Ellendale, TN, d. August 22, 1979 in Chicago, IL. Granderson left home when he was in his teens, moving to Chicago, Illinois, in 1928. Although not a professional musician, he did work with John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, among others. He turned to music full-time in the 60s and was featured as sideman and leader on many anthologies, although he never made a full album in his own right. Granderson sang and played guitar close to the style of the Memphis musicians of his youth. He stopped performing in public in 1975 and died of cancer in 1979.
