Phineas Newborn's first record (other than two slightly earlier songs) introduced to the jazz world a major talent. Blessed with a phenomenal technique and the ability to think very fast, Newborn immediately became one of jazz's top pianists, and would remain at the top until health problems forced him to become much less active. On this CD reissue, he explores seven jazz standards, including tunes by Bud Powell ("Celia"), Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown and John Lewis, plus his own "Newport Blues." Joined by bassist Oscar Pettiford, drummer Kenny Clarke and occasionally his brother Calvin Newborn on guitar, Phineas Newborn is in superb form for his debut.
