Williams' guitar playing is rooted in the delta blues style with a unique, driving rhythm topped with masterful lead lines played simultaneously - all anchored by a penetrating vocal delivery. His modified acoustic guitar, with three extra strings and homemade pickup, produced an intense sound that was unique to Big Joe. January 28, 1892 in Bluefield, WV, d. June 25, 1952 in Lynchburg, VA) was a blues guitarist and vocalist of some renown, particularly in the area of his home, in Lynchburg, Virginia.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sources conflict on Jordan's birthplace. Some sources list his birthplace as Appomattox County, Virginia, or Bluefield, West Virginia. According to his World War I draft registration card, Jordan was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. At the time of his registration on June 5, 1917, he was living in Bluefield and worked as a delivery boy and janitor. Jordan's gravestone mentions that he served in the "7th Development Battalion" during the war. His professional career started at age 35, when he was noticed by Victor Records. He went to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1927 and made several records. The records sold moderately well, and Victor decided to take Jordan to New York in 1929 for two more sessions. He recorded few known tracks in his career. In comparison with the harsh voices of many contemporary Delta blues musicians, Jordan sang in a smooth and relaxed tenor. During the Great Depression, Jordan stayed in Lynchburg, and was often found playing by the local shoe factory. By the 1940s, Jordan had lost his voice, and had stopped singing. According to a second draft registration card filled out on April 27, 1942 for World War II, Jordan was living in Lynchburg, and was unemployed. Jordan was known in his early years to be a cocaine addict, and in later life as a heavy alcoholic who was unable to hold down steady employment.</div><div><br /></div><div>He died in Lynchburg in June 1952. His gravestone lies at Forest Hill Burial Park, in Lynchburg, Virginia. His song "Church Bells Blues" was later recorded by Ralph Willis. It was also recorded by David Bromberg as a medley with Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues".</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">* * * * *</div><div><br /></div><div>By Steve Leggett</div><div>One of the most intriguing of the Piedmont blues players, Luke Jordan was born January 28, 1892, in Bluefield, WV. As a teenager he relocated to Lynchburg, VA, which was to remain his home base the rest of his life. Jordan recorded 12 tracks for Victor Records at two sessions in 1927 and 1929, ten of which have survived on 78s, including his classic versions of "Church Bell Blues," "Pick Poor Robin Clean," and "Cocaine Blues." Exhibiting a clean, precise guitar style, Jordan also possessed an elegant-sounding tenor voice that conveyed a sort of wry, good-natured feel, and his material, drawn from a repertoire of ballads, gambling tunes, ragtime, and minstrel tunes, perfectly defines the Piedmont blues. He was immensely influential on the blues players in his region, and he truly deserves to be better known outside the blues community. He died on June 25, 1952.</div></div>Blind Dog Radiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14963184850237198129noreply@blogger.comClarksdale, MS, USA34.2001086 -90.57093235.8898747638211546 -125.7271823 62.510342436178846 -55.414682299999996tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4801246651082373559.post-80318171709198639972024-02-24T21:00:00.001-06:002024-02-24T21:00:00.153-06:00SATURDAY NIGHT BLUES (2/24/2024)<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGAqdUAtByantCg_suCtzoUJ2BY_3qUC48mVimleONwEAKL4S-nE2Ihfr37MXZaJxxZi693p1TvuWngeLzwo0WhYd7Zf-VkyraNorsSmgY4CKGMhSSkzqslNwdwjS08B94M91cQ6ke0Y8Hk6vqmE0LdIapm6SK21B5qSHLckVhuS6o5yHYCXBsmXxrnfU/s900/bdr1071-cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="900" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGAqdUAtByantCg_suCtzoUJ2BY_3qUC48mVimleONwEAKL4S-nE2Ihfr37MXZaJxxZi693p1TvuWngeLzwo0WhYd7Zf-VkyraNorsSmgY4CKGMhSSkzqslNwdwjS08B94M91cQ6ke0Y8Hk6vqmE0LdIapm6SK21B5qSHLckVhuS6o5yHYCXBsmXxrnfU/w640-h426/bdr1071-cover.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />

Famous and obscure artists roll out a remarkable array of blues from the country, the city, and the prison in this first-of-its-kind compilation overseen by the Lomax estate. Taken from five decades of Alan's best field recordings in the genre, the Songbook includes previously unreleased tracks and features digital transfers using DSD technology. Here is blues at its source, impassioned, and utterly real.</div><div><br /></div><div>* * * * *</div><div>From 1933-1985, Alan Lomax (along with his father, John A. Lomax) gathered field-recorded examples of African-American song forms, most of which ended up in the expansive Library of Congress American folk music collection. This two-disc collection selects some of the best of these into a single package and the result is a wonderful and indispensable journey through the blues, beginning with the sparkling opening track, "Going Down the River," a variant of a Sleepy John Estes song done by slide guitarist Mississippi Fred McDowell, with Fannie Davis on comb kazoo and Miles Pratcher on second guitar. There are several amazingly intimate performances here, including Skip James singing "Cherry Ball Blues" at the 1966 Newport Folk Festival just days after his re-discovery, and his high, eerie voice and delicate guitar playing combine to create a stunning moment in which a legend is literally reborn out of the haze of 1930s blues 78s. That feat is nearly duplicated by Dock Boggs, whose ragged voice and banjo on "Country Blues," a variant of the banjo tune "Darling Corey," brings another lost bluesman back from the land of old 78s. There are also three very different versions of "Joe Turner" here and they afford a valuable lesson in the mutability of folk material. Joe Turner was really Joe Turney, who, in the early 1890s, was the so-called "long chain man" in Mississippi, the transfer man whose job it was to march groups of prisoners from court to the penal institutions and work camps where the convict lease system operated. Needless to say, he was much feared and hated. The first version here features Ed Young on cane fife and Hobart Smith on banjo, while the second has Miles Pratcher on guitar and Bob Pratcher on fiddle, and features the lines "I laid down happy/And I woke up crying." By the time Big Bill Broonzy's version was recorded in the early '60s, Joe Turner had become a savior who sets prisoners free, an interpretation of events hardly supported by the facts, and a fascinating study in the reversal of fortune of a blues lyric. ~ Steve Leggett</div><div><br /></div><div>Credits: Coordinator (Series) - Bill Nowlin; Liner Notes (Additional Song Notes) - David Evans, Ph.D.; Liner Notes (Introduction And Song Notes) - John Cowley, Ph.D.; Liner Notes (Preface) - Martin Scorsese; Mastered By - Phil Klum; Photography By - Alan Lomax, Shirley Collins; Producer - Anna Lomax Chairetakis; Transferred By - Steve Rosenthal.</div><div><br /></div><div>Tracklist:</div><div><ul><li>1-01. Tate's teacher was Blind Boy Fuller, and his influence shines through on the album. They brought their music with them. Detroit never achieved the fame and reputation of nearby Chicago and there are two principal factors. First, Detroit was a union town and untutored musicians had little chance of joining a musicians' union; the second was that until the late 1950s there were no major record labels in town, just a network of small independents. As James 'Rabbit' Johnson put it, That always been the problem with Detroit . . . local cat got a record out and many people don't even know about it! The Frazier family - brothers Calvin and Lonnie, and their parents, arrived in Detroit from Memphis sometime in 1936. The family probably originated in Arkansas, where Calvin said he'd been born in 1915. All the family played at least one instrument. Calvin and Johnny moved into blues. Johnny played a mean bass fiddle and Calvin a mean guitar. But they were damn poor singers and they knew I could sing like hell. We would walk the streets and play for handouts all hours of the night. Said Johnny Shines.Later he hitched up with Sampson Pittman and the pair, with pianist Sonny Glissom were remembered by washboard player/drummer James 'Peck' Curtis: I was with them, he told David Evans. We broadcasted out of Blytheville in 1935, on the radio station up there, KLCN. Calvin also met Robert Johnson around this time in Helena, Arkansas and, with Shines, played and perhaps traveled with him. From his 1938 recordings, recorded by Alan Lomax, particularly She's A Double-Crossin' Woman, it's certain that Johnson had a profound effect on Frazier's style of playing. Calvin later claimed Johnson invited him to one of his recording sessions but that he'd ended up in a Memphis hospital after being injured, and his brother Johnny killed, by the latter's father-in-law. Not everybody here has such a compelling story - but they all make some great music.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">* * * * *</div><div>By Marisa Brown</div><div>Though Detroit may never have had the instant blues recognition of a city like Chicago, it too experienced, housed, and influenced its fair share of important musicians, not the least of whom was Robert Johnson associate Calvin Frazier and, of course, John Lee Hooker. But Detroit Blues: Blues from the Motor City 1938-1954 does its best to show that the scene consisted of more than these two stars. Though the first two discs (of four!) are dedicated to Frazier and Sampson Pittman and then Hooker, respectively, the second two, and especially the last, explore the work of musicians like the prolific Baby Boy Warren, who never found much recognition beyond Hastings Street, Playboy Fuller (aka Louisiana Red), Big Maceo Merriweather, Sam Kelly, Eddie Burns, and even Joe Van Battle, a local entrepreneur and label owner, and a man who recorded a lot of the artists included here (because of the relative dearth of major studios, Detroit bluesmen weren't given as much exposure as their Windy City counterparts). The discs are not ordered chronologically, which can be a bit of an annoyance, but the detailed liner notes, which fully explain the simple, gritty, urban-industrial blues brought up from Southern workers to the factories of the North, more than make up for this. Moving from Alan Lomax field recordings and professional studio work, Detroit Blues: Blues from the Motor City 1938-1954 is a great explanation of what was happening in the city during that time period, as blues began to migrate north and become influenced by its new surroundings, as well as a great jumping-off point for an exploration of the artists who made up the lifeblood of Detroit blues.</div><div><br /></div><div>Credits: Allison Tucker - Drums; Alonso Tucker - Drums, Main Personnel; Baby Boy Warren - Composer, Guitar, Main Personnel, Primary Artist, Vocals; Bernard Besman - Composer, Main Personnel, Organ, Xylophone; Big Bill Broonzy - Composer; Big Maceo Merriweather - Composer, Main Personnel, Piano, Primary Artist, Vocals; Boogie Woogie Red - Main Personnel, Piano; Calvin Frazier - Guitar, Main Personnel, Primary Artist, Vocals; Charles Mills - Piano; Charley Mills - Main Personnel, Piano; Chuck Smith - Main Personnel, Piano; Curtis Foster - Drums, Main Personnel; Detroit Count - Main Personnel, Piano, Primary Artist, Vocals; Eddie "Guitar" Burns - Composer, Guitar, Harmonica, Primary Artist, Vocals; Eddie Burns - Harmonica, Main Personnel, Vocals; Eddie Kirkland - Composer, Guitar, Main Personnel, Primary Artist, Vocals; George Jackson - Guitar; George Little - Bass; Grace Brim - Harmonica, Main Personnel, Vocals; Henry Smith - Primary Artist; Henry Smith - Guitar, Vocals; Jesse Lee Williams - Harmonica, Main Personnel; Jimmy Miller - Main Personnel, Trumpet; Jimmy Miller - Trumpet; Jimmy Tarrant - Drums, Main Personnel; Jimmy Turner - Drums, Main Personnel; Joe Von Battle - Primary Artist, Vocals; Joe Woods - Main Personnel, Piano; John Brim - Composer, Guitar, Main Personnel, Primary Artist; John Hooks - Sax (Tenor); John Lee Hooker - Composer, Guitar, Main Personnel, Primary Artist, Vocals; John T.
