Hip-O's fourth volume of rarities from the Excello catalog shines the light on the harmonica heroes that proliferated on the label back in the '50s and early '60s. Lazy Lester shows up on four tracks, featured as a leader on "If You Think You've Lost Me," "Ponderosa Stomp" and "I Told My Little Woman" and backing Lightnin' Slim on "Wintertime Blues." Slim Harpo's two instrumentals "Buzzin'" and "Snoopin' Around" are on board, along with a pair from Jerry McCain, "Trying to Please" and "Things Ain't Right." In the rarities department, the inclusion of Baby Boy Warren's "Santa Fe" and "Bring Me My Machine Gun" (with Sonny Boy Williamson on harp) along with both sides of Little Sonny's Excello single ("Love Shock" and "I'll Love You Baby") and the impossibly rare "You Better Change" by the mysterious Ole Sonny Boy raise the ante in that sweepstakes. Lightnin' Slim with Schoolboy Cleve's "I'm Him," Jimmy Anderson's "Frankie & Johnny," Vincent Monroe's "If I Had My Life to Live Over," Silas Hogan's "Lonesome La La" (featuring Sylvester Buckley) and a pair from Whispering Smith complete the collection. - Review by Cub Koda.
